Coach Rodrigo Elizondo Santos

Rodrigo Elizondo Santos

Head Coach

Coach Rodrigo brings over a decade of competitive swimming and coaching experience to the Mueller Manatees. Originally from Tamaulipas, Mexico, he is a USA Swimming Level 1 certified coach, a USA Masters Swimming Level 1 coach, and a Red Cross certified lifeguard. He also holds a swimming instructor credential from the Real Academia de Natación in Spain.

Rodrigo is a decorated competitive swimmer in his own right — a 2024 TAAF State Champion in the 200 Free and 100 Breast, a five-time Ironman 70.3 finisher, and a multiple open water race winner in both the U.S. and Mexico.

As a coach, Rodrigo has led teams at every level: he most recently served as Head Swim Coach at Starbase Texas (SpaceX), coaching swimmers ages 3 through adult. Before that, he led Saint Joseph Academy's swim team to consecutive state championship qualifications and grew participation at McAllen Swim Club by 50% through inclusive programming. He has a special passion for working with young swimmers and adaptive athletes, having coached 26 swimmers with disabilities in preparation for Special Olympics competition.

Rodrigo's coaching philosophy centers on safety, skill development, and making swimming fun. He believes in structured practices that meet swimmers where they are — grouping by ability, building progressively, and using positive reinforcement to help every athlete grow in confidence and technique.
